MM, a 75-year-old retiree, was acquitted of first-degree murder in a so-called "cold case."
This was MM's second jury trial. The jury deadlocked in the first trial.
Strong evidence was presented at trial that showed the murder was likely committed by two other men. Evidence that MM committed the murder was much less convincing. This case involved forensic genetic genealogy, complex DNA, and a series of other expert-related issues.
MM was held in jail for 2.5 years while his case was pending.
